According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Damiano Cunego is set to leave Lampre-Merida after ten seasons spent in the Italian outfit. Reportedly some interest in signing the former Giro d’Italia champion was shown by Pro Continental and Continental teams, but nothing has been signed yet.
During ten years of riding for Lampre, the 32-year old Italian has won the Giro d’Italia with four stage victories taken in the process, as well as Il Lombardia three times and young riders classification at the Tour de France.
Fourth places at the GP di Lugano and the Strade Bianche were so far Cunego’s best results obtained this season. Even though he certainly hopes for a good performance at the upcoming Vuelta a Espana in order to increase his chances of signing new contract on satisfying terms, apparently it wasn’t convincing enough for the Italian team to extend a deal with 32-year old rider.
Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that among teams interested in signing Cunego for 2015 season are Androni Giocattoli, Neri Sottoli, Vini Fantini-Nippo and Bretagne-Seche.
