While some smaller WorldTour one-day races are flourishing after E3 Harelbeke confirmed they signed a new three year deal with the UCI to remain as a top tier event in world cycling, the Cyclassics Hamburg is struggling.

The race, which used to be sponsored by Vatenfall, has admitted that 2016 may be the last running of the event, Germany’s only WorldTour race.

“Unless the economic situation changes, then we will have to seriously think about moving the event somewhere where it will be more profitable,” race organizer Christian Toetzke told local newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt.

Toetzke said there is options for the race, but they are outside of Hamburg and the race organsiers want to give people the chance to keep the race where it belongs first before looking to move elsewhere.

“Interest in the Cyclassics is great. We have two concrete, ready-to-sign offers from businesses who want to continue the concept of Cyclassics in other cities, one in Germany and another in a neighboring country,” added Toetzke.

Should the Cyclassics leave Germany, that would be the second big race to leave the nation, after the Bayern-Rundfahrt was cancelled this year. The 2017 Tour de France is due to start in Dusseldorf and the UCI confirmed plans were underway to revive the Deutschland Tour.
