Elis Ligtlee had already secured for herself a complete set of medals throughout the Euro Championships: Thursday she took a bronze in the Team Sprint, on Friday she grabbed a gold in the Sprint, as well as a silver in the 500-meter Time Trial. Now on Sunday, the 21-year old Dutch woman ended her fantastic European Championships with yet another gold medal.
Repeating her success from two years ago, she once again became the European champion in the Keirin. In a thrilling final, the four times world champion Kristina Vogel was forced to settle for second place. For the German Vogel, this was her third medal of these championships, but missing from her collection this time is a gold.
For the men, there was an even greater surprise. The Czech Pavel Kelemen, a two-time U-23 European champion from 2013, who had never won a medal at the elite level, committed himself to a long sprint against the French favorite François Pervis. Consequently, Pervis, who is a six-time world champion and a world record holder in the Kilometer Time Trial, must leave yet again without a European title, since he was eliminated in the first round of the Sprint race and decided not to start the Kilometer Time Trial. With this silver, he did win his sixth European Championship medal, and salvaged something of his time at the 2015 championships. And certainly Kelemen owes a large portion of his victory to the fact that a second Czech rider qualified for the event, and his teammate Tomas Babek sacrificed himself for Kelemen’s chances.
