The Danish road race champion Michael Mørkøv, has reviewed his 2013 season, which he describes as his breakthrough on the international cycling scene. The Dane surprisingly won the 6th stage of Vuelta a Espana after a mass sprint, where he overtook Argentinian sprinter Maximiliano Richeze.

But the stage win in the Vuelta a Espana wasn’t the only success for Mørkøv. He also won the Danish road race championships, which was his first after have won several Danish championships on the track. He also finished 2nd in Paris-Tours and 4th overall in Tour de l’Eurometropole. Michael Mørkøv describes what has been the highlight of the season:

"The highlight of the season for me, was without no doubt my victory in Caceres on the 6th stage of the Vuelta. It was, together with my victory at the Danish nationals, my breakthrough as a cyclist. The two victories are definitely victories, I will remember with great pride. However, being excluded from the Tour de France line-up was extremely disappointing. I was really well prepared and in the shape of my life before entering the Tour de Suisse. Looking back now, I'm happy about the way everything turned out as my season took a different and more rewarding path personally with the victory in the Vuelta and finishing second in Paris-Tours.”

Michael Mørkøv describes the biggest surprise of the season.

"The biggest surprise was when the Dane, Rasmus Quaade in his time trial World Championships debut surprisingly was targeting a medal in the intermediate time check and finished sixth. I was very surprised and happy for him. It was truly an inspiring performance.”

Michael Mørkøv has high ambitions for next season, where he hopes to repeat a stage win in a GC. In 2014 he hopes to be a part of Team Saxo-Tinkoff’s Tour de France roster. In the winter break, he will participate in some six-day races in Rotterdam and in his home country, in Copenhagen.

"My goals for the upcoming season are to keep developing, to improve my spring classics results and to be in the Tour de France line-up. In addition, I will do whatever I can to win stages and one-day races. My winter season is a bit atypical as I, besides winter training this winter will be doing two 6-day races - Rotterdam from 2-7. January and most importantly in Copenhagen from 30th of January to February 4th," concludes Michael Morkov .
