Today’s 200 kilometer long and hilly French one-day race Paris-Camembert was dominated by a breakaway trio including CULT Energy Pro Cycling’s Michael Carbel but is was a late counter-attack who made it first across the finish line.
The hilly landscape took its toll on the three escapees and slowly but steadily, the gap went down and with 30 kilometers to go, they were swept up by the speeding peloton. The early neutralization of the escapees immediately prompted a series of counter-attacks and a group of seven quickly managed to work up a relatively big gap at this point of the race. From this group new attacks were launched and eventually Julien Loubet (Marseille) took the win ahead of Pierrick Fedrigo (Bretagne).
DS Luke Roberts says:
“It actually wasn’t planned to be in the first breakaway but once Michael was in there, we decided to make the most of it. Unfortunately, it didn’t give us the result we wanted so naturally, we are a little disappointed. Being a neo pro, Michael did what he could in the break and took some points for the mountain classification but sadly it wasn’t enough to win it.”
