The Eritrean Mekseb Debesay has been elected African Cyclist of the Year 2014 by the 21-member jury chaired by Bernard Hinault, five-time winner of the Tour de France. The trophy which was introduced by the organizers of the Tropicale Amissa Bongo three years ago, is awarded annually to the an African rider who has achieved remarkable result and has had a positive impact on the image of African cycling..
 

Mekseb Debesay won ahead of the last two winners Louis Meintjes (2014) and Natnael Berhane (2013). The Eritrean rider was received the honour due to his victories in Algeria, Cameroon and Rwanda and his first place in the final standings of the UCI Africa Tour.
 

23-year-old Mekseb Debesay has been riding for the German Continental team Bike and Aid - Ride for Help.
