Today, the Challenge Mallorca Trofeo Palma was ridden. It consisted of ten alps of 11,6 km in Palma. A breakaway got away from the peloton, but never got more than a one minute lead. It was all decided in a sprint, where Sacha Modolo took the victory. Jens Debusschere was runner-up and Dylan Groenewegen completed the podium.
The day was dominated by Lampre-Merida, who all day long controlled the pace in the peloton, reeled in the peloton and drove their sprinter Sacha Modolo to the win. But he was challenged by Jens Debusschere of Lotto-Belisol. In the last 20 m Debusschere came close to Modolo, but he couldn’t pass him.
"I was close to the victory today. Unfortunately I didn't make it. It was a quiet day for us in the peloton, Lampre controlled the distance between the bunch and the break. The guys, with Stig Broeckx as penultimate man and Kenny Dehaes as last man, brought me in a good position for the sprint.”
The results at the end of the last season have given him confidence for this season. In the sprint, Gianni Meersman passed him and therefore he had to wait a bit.
“I had to wait a bit because Gianni Meersman passed. Then Sacha Modolo had gotten ahead and I couldn't get in front of him anymore. My results at the end of last season gave me much confidence, that's why I worked more on my sprint this winter than previous years. I'm now better than in 2013 in the same time of the year."
