Two days ago Jens Debusschere got his time as Belgian champion off to the best possible start when he won the first stage of the Tour de Wallonie. Yesterday he lost the yellow jersey when he could only manage fifth in the bunch sprint on stage 2.
Jens Debusschere had to wait for a long time before getting the chance to wear the Belgian Drikleur but when he finally lined up for his first race with the coveted jersey, he proved the power that had allowed him to win the Belgian championships as he won stage 1 of the Tour de Wallonie. Due to the win, he became the first leader of the 5-day race and yesterday he dearly wanted to defend his lead on another day for the sprinters.
This time, however, he came up short as he could only manage 5th in the bunch sprint.
"In the last corner I was in a good position on Nizzolo's wheel in the last corner," he told DirectVelo. "Unfortunately, I was boxed in. Nizzolo was in the right side of the road and one of his teammates was in the left. I tried to pass them but it was not possible.
"It's a shame because I did a good sprint and the team worked throughout the day. Furthermore, I lose the yellow jersey. This is a double disappointment . I wanted to keep this jersey on my shoulders."
