Jan Denuwelaere was disqualified by the jury and received a fine of 200 Swiss francs for his behaviour in the finale of the Koppenbergcross. "It is not a nice feeling," he said in a press release from his team."
"This is not nice," said a crestfallen Denuwelaere. "I am in the centre of it.Today I did not have the best feeling on the bike and to end up as a topic of discussion for my role in the final sprint is an extra disappointment."
After the race, the jury said that they had done everything to make Denuwelaere aware of the fact that he had to leave the race. He refuses that claim.
"I have never received a signal that I had to leave the race. Not even in the finale. I heard from the cheers of the audience that the leaders were coming, but when I entered the finishing straight, I felt I still had enough of a gap.
"If I Wout and Sven felt bothered by me, I want to apologize. And I will accept the fine without any complaints. But again, it was absolutely not my intention to interfere with someone. I hope this is clear."
