On Saturday Jan Denuwelaere was disqualified by the jury after his maneuver in the Koppenbergcross where he blocked Sven Nys in the sprint. The rider will also receive a fine of 300 Swiss Franc.
As he was about to start the final lap, Denuwelaere was passed by his teammate Wout Van Aert and Sven Nys and blocked Nys when he went into the final turn. Uusally, a rider is taken out of the race when he is 80% of a lap behind the leaders. It usually happens when he crosses teh finish line.
"In the penultimate lap, Denuwelaere was not so far behind," Guy Dobbelaere from the jury told Het Nieuwsblad."Therefore, we could not take him out of the race, but in the final lap he must have been aware that he had been riding very slowly. Once it became clear that he would be passed, we did all we could to take him out of the race. However, he ignored us. We used a whistle, yelled, waved but he kept riding. Of course that makes it difficult. We could not drag him off the bike. And to stand in front of him was not option as we would then also have blocked the road for Nys and Van Aert.
Ultimately, the jury decided to disqualify Denuwelaere. He also gets two penalties.
"The maximum penalties," says Dobbelaere. "A fine of 100 Swiss Franc for his failure to follow the instructions of the jury and 200 euros for providing assistance to a teammate who was not on the same lap as him."
