Dani Diaz (Funvic) not only managed to avoid any time loss to his direct rivals in yesterday's time trial of the Tour de San Luis. In fact, he gained a few seconds and now leads Rodolfo Torres (Colombia) by 1.09 and Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) by 1.25. His second final victory after the 2013 win is closer. However, with today's ascent to the Filos de los Comechingones at 2010 meters above sea level, nothing is decided.
In any case, the Argentine was very pleased with his performance in the time trial. "I did not expect to beat the favorites. Indeed, as I said, I expected to lose 20 or 30 seconds but I felt good and I could do a very good time trial. I am very happy because I defended the lead and didn't lose anything. I did not expect to do so well. After the race, I asked if I was still the leader. This difference is not final but it allows me to stay calmer and tomorrow I will be able to regulate a bit more."
However, he lost his teammate Alex Diniz who was sitting in third overall but had to abandon the race due to gastroenteritis.
"I will miss Diniz, because he is very strong, but I have friends in other teams and they can help me if I need it. I will defend the advantage with all my strength. Hopefully the legs will respond well because it is a long climb (17km) where you can lose a lot of time."
And he does not trust Quintana: "Many believe it is already over, but I still have to face Nairo. He will become better every day and he will be the rider to be aware of. It is going to be very difficult because it is his terrain. I will do my best in the stage."
"I would love to go to Europe if I am given the chance to do the races there," he replied when asked about the possibility of joining a team from the WorldTour.
