Two days ago Nacer Bouhanni won the Sluitingsprijs, but apparently it did not happen without a fight. "Three riders have complained during the race," said Topsport Vlaanderen manager Walter Planckaert.
Walter Planckaert, team leader at Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise, was unhappy about the sprint victory of Nacer Bouhanni, which also prevented his rider Edward Theuns from taking the overall win in the Europe Tour.
"During the race, three riders have complained about Bouhanni. There's always something with him. Scandalous," Planckaert told Het Nieuwsblad.
Bouhanni who has a past as an amateur boxer, apparently exercised his passion during the race: he is accused of having hit a rider with his fist no less than three times.
"The judges acted as if their nose was bleeding," said Planckaert. "Was it because Bouhanni was the biggest name on the start list?"
"During the race, there were indeed reports of improper behavior from Bouhanni," commented jury member Philippe Marien.
"But after the race, there was no official complaint. Until one is lodged, we can not do anything."
Walter Planckaert did not agree with that interpretation. "They should have taken Bouhanni out of the race."
And what did Bouhanni say? "The others may think what they like. Do I make crazy sprints? Maybe, but I manage to win."
