BMC Racing Team's Silvan Dillier was part of the breakaway for the second time in three days at the Giro d'Italia Wednesday before teammates Damiano Caruso and Darwin Atapuma were ninth and 10th, respectively, on the race's first summit finish.

Dillier and four others led by more than 10 minutes midway through the 152-kilometer race. But when Jan Polanc (Lampre-Merida) attacked with about 10 kilometers to go, no one could follow. He soloed in 91 seconds ahead of a four-man chase group while Dillier was caught by the chase group in the final kilometer and finished 14th, 1:53 behind.

Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) finished fourth to climb into the overall lead. Caruso moved from 16th to 11th overall and is 1:22 behind. Moinard is 15th (1:46 behind) and Atapuma is 16th (1:49 behind).

"Today I had to be in the breakaway or the grupetto," Dillier told BeIn Sport. "Fortunately, I was able to get into the move. It is often the peloton who decides the fate of the breakaway, not the attackers. In the end I could not stay ahead, I could not keep my spot on the podium. I felt good. It was hard to predict who would be good on the last climb. It was not easy today."
