The heat wave did not stop IAM Cycling from putting in an impressive performance at the Trofeo Matteotti in Pescara, Italy. On a demanding 14.5 kilometre circuit, which they covered 13 times, the members of the Swiss Pro Continental team came away with two standout performances.
Despite the sweltering 39 degree temperatures, Sébastien Reichenbach and Johann Tschopp proved unbeatable in their comeback race after taking a post Swiss Championship break. They were members of a breakaway consisting of 9 riders that slipped away during the first lap of the race, and remained at the head of affairs for more than 180 kilometres. Under their impetus, the group was reduced to four riders after 120 kilometres. Then the two IAM Cycling riders spearheaded the move that found them riding as the final two escapees for the last two rounds of the circuit. The two men came to the line triumphantly together, Johann Tschopp leaving the victory to his training partner, Sébastien Reichenbach. The neo-pro from Fully in Switzerland, savoured his first win.
“It’s like a dream and I’m really grateful to Johann for giving me this victory bouquet. The day was hard, but we were the strongest group from the start. We managed our race perfectly and were able to shed the other riders.”
Johann Tschopp could not be happier himself with the outcome of the race. “We have been training together, under the same coach, for five weeks now, and our efforts are bearing fruit. We broke away after just 8 kilometres, and in spite of the heat and difficult course, we were able to hold our advantage. Behind us, the team was able to discourage any counter attacks. We really pulled off a great team victory, and are just happy now.”
