Omar Fraile (1990) will start his first year in the WorldTour with the South African Dimension Data after three seasons of growth at Caja Rural-RGA. The Basque climber will do the the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana and hopes to obtain results with his new team and be consistent in the stage races.
Next week Fraile will be with his team in Calpe before debuting at the Challenge de Mallorca. He is looking forward to his debut at the top level. “I'm very excited about it. It was a good time to change. It is a step up and a dream come truth. I have enthusiasm and desire to start the year already," he tells BiciCiclismo. In 2015, he won the mountains jersey in his debut at the Vuelta and obtained two victories, a stage of the Four Days of Dunkirk and the Giro dell'Apennino.
Fraile already met his new teammates in Cape Town last December. "I was surprised that we had such a good bond despite the different cultures," he says. "Cavendish is totally different from what people think. He is like a close uncle, you can talk to him perfectly.”
At his side he will have Catalan sports director Alex Sans. "Clearly he will help me a lot now and in the future. He already knew me and advised the team to sign me," he says. And he will rely on Igor Anton, the latest addition to the team. "For me it is a joy. To be two is good because we are in a foreign team, with the handicap of the English language. To share the travel and room with him makes me excited, "he says.
Mallorca, Algarve, Catalonia, the Basque Country, the three Ardennes Classics, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a Espana is "a dream calendar that I love” he tells the Spanish website. It will be his debut in the Giro. "I like the Giro very much and I want to ride it. Yes, I have respect for the fact that I will do two grand tours and I know that the pace is different in WorldTour races, but I think it's time to take that step and see how it will turn out," he says.
"It seems I will to be the leader in the Giro and I think I will have my chances and try to make the most of them. Above all, I would like to show myself and make a qualitative step in the WorldTour. And in some stage race, I want to be consistent," he sums up his objectives.
His debut in the Ardennes will be another dream come true. "I’ve spent years and years watching the classics on TV. They have a special charm, and when they offered me to do them I did not believe it," he admits.
