The inaugural Dubai Tour can be said as successful. It attracted some of the best cyclist in the world. Taylor Phinney(BMC) bested world champions Tony Martin(OPQS) and Fabian Cancellara(Trek) to win the time trial and overall.
Lorenzo Giorgetti, director of the Dubai Tour, and sales director of RCS Sport, agrees, "I think the Dubai Tour has started big. It's good news for cycling. It's a new event and from this very first edition, the riders have been first class."
Also we've witnessed the big name sprinters battle for victories. Marcel Kittel(Giant-Shimano) beat Mark Cavendish(OPQS) and Peter Sagan(Cannondale) three times, and took home three stages.
"I think this is the only race in the world that takes place in one city, in a modern city. We did 400km in Dubai, that's very complex to manage. We know how to organise a race but here in Dubai they know how to organise a city. I'm sure this will lead to a bigger and better event in Dubai." says Giorgetti.
And if four stages are managable, why not have a fifth stage? Of course, the race will have to go outside Dubai for that. In fact, this year's stage three, a rolling stage to Hatta, already went outside Dubai.
The main issue, though, is the clash with other races, especially other races on the Arabian Peninsula. "It all depends on the space available on the race calendar. We're looking to make it five stages but there are also races in Qatar and Oman. We need approval so we don't clash with them but why not." says Saeed Hareb, chairman of the local organising committee.
RCS sport, the race organizers, is also the one that organizes Giro d'Italia. Hence the rumor that Giro could start in Dubai in a future day. "If the Giro d'Italia wants to start from here, we're ready. It's up to RCS Sport," Hareb said.
RCS is also ready, too. But they're more focused on Dubai Tour itself. "We considered starting Giro in Dubai at the very beginning but we now think that it's more important to establish the Dubai Tour. If the Giro d'Italia happens, it will happen but the Dubai Tour is the priority."
If the Giro were to start in Dubai, the riders will do a 6-hour transfer from UAE back to Italy. And there's also a 3-hour time differential.
