Next year Samuel Dumoulin goes into his 15th season as a professional, with the Tour of California being the main novelty on his calendar. As usual, the national races and the Tour de France will be his main focus and for the first time he will ride in three different continents as he will start in the Tour Down Under, and he will also ride Milan-Sanremo and the Tour de Suisse.
34-year-old Samuel Dumoulin has announced a detailed racing schedule on his website. With 72 race days in 2014 and 82 race days in 2014, he will have a similar amount of racing to the past as he is set to do 83 days of racing in 28 races (20 one-dayraces and 8 stage races) of which only five are outside the French borders. He will have 8 blocks of competitions from January's Tour Down Under to Paris-Tours in October.
Dumoulin emphasizes that the French teams do not only have the obligation of the WorldTour but should also do the races on the French national calendar. Knowing that injuries and poor form can change the plans, he is expected to make the selection for both the Tour de France and the World Championships.
He will start his season in Australia. He has not done the Tour Down Under since 2007 and he will return to Milan-Sanremo and the Tour de Suisse for the first time since 2009. The latter race will be his last stop before the Tour de France. Since 2003, he has only missed the 2007 edition of the French grand tour. However, he has never done the Giro d'Italia and only been at the start of the Vuelta a Espana once.
The French rider will debut at the Tour of California in mid-May. And the last part of the season will focus on French classics and Coupe de France races, a series that he won in 2012 and 2013 and in which he finished second in 2014.
This year Dumoulin didn't win a single race for the first time since 2007. He was second in the Tour du Haut-Var and Paris-Camembert. His main achievements is a stage win in the 2008 Tour de France, three stage wins in the Volta a Catalunya, one in the Criterium du Dauphiné and wins in one-day races GP d'Ouverture La Marseillaise and Tro Bro Leon and stage races Paris-Correze and Etoile de Besseges.
