The sprint preparation was disorganized on the wet roads in the final kilometer, as Tom Dumoulin and Warren Barguil took 17th and 25th. Peter Sagan took the victory on stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse, Thibaut Pinot remains the overall leader.

One 3rd category climb was on the program for the riders during the 193.1km relatively flat 6th stage in the Tour de Suisse. Four riders formed the break of the day and Team Giant-Alpecin, Etixx Quick Step and FDJ led the chase.

With 1km to go, all attacks were neutralized and the bunch prepared for a sprint. Due to the wet roads and many corners in the final kilometer, the bunch stretched out and the sprint preparation for John Degenkolb was disorganized.

As a result, there were several gaps in the bunch. Peter Sagan (Tinkoff – Saxo) won the sprint, Dumoulin took 17th, Barguil 25th and after being unable to sprint, Degenkolb came in at 41st. Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) is still the leader in the general classification.

After passing the line, Dumoulin said: “Unfortunately, I lost 5” on Thomas (Team Sky) and Fuglsang (Astana Pro Team) today, after a split in the bunch.

“It was a hectic finale. 7km before the finish a crash happened and Georg [Preidler] went down. At the same time, Breschel (Tinkoff – Saxo) crashed into my rear wheel and I lost my position in the bunch, so a good result was out of sight.”

Coach Addy Engels added: “Georg is unharmed after his crash. John tried hard but was unable to deliver a sprint, due to the splits in the bunch. Also the sprint preparation was not perfect, as they lost each other in a hectic final kilometer.

“Today didn’t completely went according to our plan, but we managed to limit the damage. Tomorrow, the course will be a little more difficult and we will have a new chance with John.”
