Tom Dumoulin followed the best on stage 7 of the Vuelta to finish just outside the top 10 in 14th, he holds on to his second place in the GC. Bert-Jan Lindeman won the stage from the breakaway, as Esteban Chaves keeps the race lead.

The 191.1km from Jodar to La Alpujarra finished atop the Alto di Capileira, a long and gradual climb.

Five riders formed the break of the day and started the final climb with an advantage of 6’ on the bunch, with Tom Dumoulin and Lawson Craddock still there. Astana Pro Cycling led the chase.

With a strong punch in the final kilometer Bert-Jan Lindeman (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) won stage 7 as the breakaway stayed clear. Tom Dumoulin finished in the GC group in 14th and holds on to second overall.

Coach Christian Guiberteau said: “Our plan was to only react on large breakaway groups and to bring Tom and Lawson in a good position to the bottom of the final climb.

“Tom was able to follow the GC group and Lawson finished at 5’. The team did a good job today and we are looking forward to tomorrow’s stage, as we will have a new opportunity with John [Degenkolb]."
