Tom Dumoulin raced to 5th place at the World Championships individual time trial of 53km. Lawson Craddock, Tobias Ludvigsson and Nikias Arndt took 22nd, 41st, and 52nd, respectively. Vasil Kiryienka is the new World Champion. 

The world championships in Richmond, Virginia, continued with the individual time trial for elite men. Four riders from Team Giant-Alpecin rode against the clock, representing the national colors of Germany, the United States, the Netherlands and Sweden, respectively. The 53km course included long straight roads and technical turns in the last few kilometers, before heading for the false-flat finishing climb of 680m.

Dumoulin completed the 53km course with a time of 1:03:30 and an average pace of 50.1km/h, which was enough for 5th place. Craddock, Ludvigsson and Arndt raced to 22nd, 41st and 52nd, respectively.

After his race Dumoulin said: “Yesterday I was still struggling with an injury. But I still set the fifth-fastest time, which gives me a feeling of satisfaction. As a professional athlete you always want more, but sometimes you have to accept that more isn’t possible.

"Mentally this was a really hard hour for me but I kept on fighting and I think I can be proud of myself. I had a little problem in an area downstairs and that's not an ideal situation. I kept on fighting.

"I didn't come here for a fifth place but in the end that's it. I'm just happy that I kept on fighting, and that's it. That's something that I'm happy with.

"It's quite unexpected. Kiryienka has been close a lot of times already and I think he deserves this. He did a very strong ride and I think that we all need to congratulate him."
