“This is my first WorldTour win. I’ve had some bad luck and then I have been denied a few times by Tony [Martin] but now it’s great to get the win finally and to move back into contention for the overall.”

Yesterday Tom Dumoulin was left hugely disappointed when a badly timed puncture saw him lose 14 seconds to many of his main rivals. Today  he bounced back by winning the time trial and was pleased to get back in GC contention.

Tom Dumoulin has made up for the disappointment of losing valuable time on yesterday’s second stage of the Eneco Tour by winning the stage three time trial.

Dumoulin raced around the flat, fast 9.6km course in a time of 10’55″32 averaging over 52kmh to take the win by two seconds. As a result of his superb effort, Dumoulin moves back into contention for the overall classification at the Eneco Tour, now sitting in a close second place on GC.

This was Dumoulin's second outing in the national champion’s time trial suit which has beenspecially developed in cooperation with Giant to be as fast as possible. Together with one of the fastest bikes available and a fine tuned position through aerodynamic testing with the team’s experts and coaches Dumoulin now starts every time trial with all the advantages on his side.

He still needs to do the final job though out on the course and today everything went right for him. Dumoulin raced around the course to take the lead with still a large portion of the field to come home so he had a long wait before he could finally savour the victory but in the end the day was his and he could celebrate his first WorldTour victory.

“I am super happy, could not have done it better,” said Dumoulin after the finish. “I was really focussed on this race and I did it as perfect as possible, focusing on my position and [the] corners.

“Yesterday was not easy, I was really disappointed about it. It was really hard work to get back and also disappointing to lose time.

“This is my first WorldTour win. I’ve had some bad luck and then I have been denied a few times by Tony [Martin] but now it’s great to get the win finally and to move back into contention for the overall.”

Team Giant-Shimano coach Addy Engels added: “It was a pleasure to follow and coach Tom in the car today – he looked really strong and his position for a time trial is really good. It was a long and nervous wait after his finish and the end of the race but in the end it was all good.

“During the race I keep motivating him and keep reminding him to hold his body position and stay relaxed on the bike. I also talk him through the up coming corners but the rest is up to him on the bike.

“We prepared well for this with Tom riding the course twice and then also following Stamsnijder in the car so he knew exactly what he had to do in the race. We also knew Cancellara would be the man to beat and coming into the final kilometre it was close but Tom rode the final k in about a minute which was really quick.

“The team work to giving him all the advantages, helping to develop the best bike and equipment but he then has to race the bike and today he really deserved it after a tough day yesterday.”
