Tom Dumoulin says that he will only target a Grand Tour in 2016 if it can coincide with his schedule, which is allowing him to peak for the Olympics.
“I am not sure [about racing for the classification at a grand tour] yet. It has to fit into my program for Rio. Rio is the main focus, for sure, you shouldn’t have too many goals,” Dumoulin told VeloNews before the presentation at the Abu Dhabi Tour.
He says his Giant-Alpecin team are fully behind his Olympic dream and the 24 year old says he doesn’t expect the team to go back on their word and force him to ride GC in a Grand Tour.
“The team and sponsors are willing to work with me to be 100 percent at the Olympics,” Dumoulin explained.
“We will have to speak about it this winter, but I can’t imagine that suddenly it will all change and suddenly the team goes with the flow. We just have to think clearly, and objectively about it, and we’ll make a good plan.”
