The third stage of the Tour of Turkey had the first true ascents, with 2 climbs of 1st category in the last 65km of the race and it was the first test for the GC riders.
Lampre Merida was waiting for the last climb where the race was expected to explode. Sports director Bruno Vicino had given Kristijan Durasek the leadership for the stage and he attacked with 8km to go in the company of Davide Rebellin.
On the final ramps, he was aware that Rebellin was fastest and he tried to go alone with 1.5 km and 500 meters to go but it was all in vain.
"Today, I had very good sensations, I knew that the stage would suit my characteristics and I wanted to try the attack on the final ascent," he said. "When I was with Rebellin, I knew he was a tough opponent to beat in a sprint, so I took the initiative 1.5 km from the finish by trying to go alone, but there was nothing to do.
"I tried again at 500m from the end, but even in this case I was unable to get clear. Rebellin did well to exploit his sprint characteristics.
"I tried to attack Rebellin twice, but he responded both times and got back on my wheel. That's the way it is. I haven't achieved the stage win I wanted today, but I coulnd't have done any more. And it's still a good result.
"I know that I have lost a golden opportunity to win, but the condition is good and I have the proof that I am good. Then for the next stages we are serene and I hope that I will be able to reach the highest goal. The race is still long and open."
After today's stage Durasek is second, 7 seconds behind Rebellin.
