With an aggressive performance, Julien El Fares (Marseille) took the mountains jersey in the Tour de l'Ain.
"The mountains jersey was not an original target," he told Directvelo. "But as the team is a bit on the limit right now, it is a good thing to have. This allows us to show ourselves.
"I was not very well on the second day even though I was in the break. I suffered from intestinal problems. I missed the first KOM sprint so I did not think about the points.
"Simply, I found myself in the early break today. I knew that we would not sruvive. There were too strong riders in our group. Therefore I decided to take the points at the top of the first two climbs.
"I'm a little lonely in the team since Rémy (Di Gregorio) abandoned. This is why I sat up in the finale. I had to protect myself for tomorrow. If I feel good, I will try to make the right move and consolidate my polka-dot jersey. But I know in advance that it will not be easy."
