Martin Elmiger finally took the first Swiss championships for the IAM team when he won today's road race in Roggliswil. Having escaped with Michael Albasini (Orica-GreenEDGE) and Steve Morabito (BMC) in the finale, he emerged as the fastest in the sprint.
In its first year of existence, IAM failed to win the Swiss national championships and this year the biggest team from the Alpine country were determined to make amends. Finally, they came away with the good when one of their veterans took the title.
With three titles already on his palmares, Martin Elmiger is an excellent rider for this kind of race and he again put his skills to good use when he added a fourth win to his palmares. In the finale, he escaped with another excellent Swiss one-day rider, Michael Albasini, and climber Steve Morabito.
It came down to a sprint from the trio and the odds were on the fast Elmiger and Albasini to battle it out for the win. The former denied the latter a maiden title by taking his fourth win 13 years after the first one.
Elmiger will show off his new colours when he lines up as part of the IAM team in the Tour de France.
Result:
1. Martin Elmiger 5.01.00
2. Michael Albasini
3. Steve Morabito
4. Martin Kohler +0.09
5. Gregory Rast
