Like Linus Gerdemann, Fabian Wegmann returned to Germany after five years abroad and started the 2016 season with the pro continental Team Stölting.
However, the 36-year-old could rarely show his skills and a 10th place at Eschborn-Frankfurt (1.HC), 11th place at the GP Lugano (1.HC) and another 10th place at the GP Wallonie (1.1) were the only three top results. "Of course, I did not have the successes, but if you do not have the consistency in the race calendar, the preparation is missing," Wegmann told radsport-news.com at the start of the Münsterland Giro
The three-time German champion would have liked more invitations to WorldTour races than those for Flèche Wallonne and the Cyclassics in Hamburg. Wegmann & Co. were left with only a few possibilities to compete with the best.
With 54th place in the smallest of the three Ardennes classics and 104th place in Hamburg, Wegmann did not do as well as he had joped. "The opponents at Flèche Wallonne came from the Tour of the Basque Country. They had been riding harder than we had. We felt that. You cannot get the racing harships in training," he commented on his performance on the famous Mur de Huy.
How Wegmann will continue in the coming year has not yet been decided. Most recently, the German reported that the performance at the Münsterland Giro would be the last in the Stölting jersey. The team will only have a Continental license in the coming year - but for Wegmann the third division is not an option.
Since the chances of a contract with a first or second division team do not seem to be great, the end of the career for the classics specialist could also be imminent. However, Wegmann wants to continue in cycling - if not on the bike, "then as a sports director or in the organization," he said.
