Ioannis Tamouridis delivered some needed success for his Euskaltel team when he took his fifth consecutive win at the Greek time trial championships earlier today. The win was just the fourth for the Basque team in what has until now been a hugely disappointing season.
Prior to this season, the Euskaltel team decided to adjust its recruitment policy which required that any new signing should either be Basque himself or have been part of Basque teams earlier in his career. In an attempt to get enough value points to secure its place its WorldTour status, the squad signed a number of riders who had picked up plenty of those points in lesser-known races around the globe.
One of those riders was Greek time trial and track specialist who has had his first taste of WorldTour racing this year. He recently had a solid performance in his debut Giro d'Italia, sprinting into the top 10 in one of the race's flat stages.
Today he proved that he still knows how to win as he took his fifth consecutive victory at the Greek time trial championships. The win was just the fourth for his Euskaltel team which has had a hugely disappointing season so far.
The team hopes to get back on track at the Tour de France where the line-up is expected to be built around climbers Igor Anton and Mikel Nieve. Meanwhile, Tamouridis will finish off the first part of his season on Sunday when he attempts to reclaim the road race crown that he lost last year when Ioannis Drakakis broke his two-year winning streak.
