2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) remains confident as he prepares to race his first Giro-Tour double in three years and the 36-year-old Australian is buoyant that he can deliver a good result at La Grande Boucle.
Despite entering the race with merely five weeks of focused training Evans rounded out the podium after winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and runner-up Rigoberto Uran (Sky) at last month's Giro d'Italia. Initially Evans intended to use the Italian grand tour as an extended training ride to sharpen and improve his build-up for the Tour de France. Evans has not raced since the Giro.
"Having a Giro in my legs already this year, means my lead up has been more focussed on recovery than training," the 2011 winner of the Tour said on his website.
Evans has spent that recovery on a training camp with teammates Steve Morabito and Brent Bookwalter and has taken some time off with his family.
The BMC Racing Team Tour de France strategy sees the team enter the race with Evans as their leader drawing upon the assistance of Tour of California winner Tejay van Garderen who stars as a first class domestique. Should Evans falter for some reason during the Tour, van Garderen will be ready to assume a leading role on the BMC Racing Team roster.
In a repeat of his pre-Giro attitude, Evans is pursuing a wait and see approach to the Tour.
"Overall, it's been coming together well," he said. "Of course, we will have a much better idea after a few days of racing, but my recovery has been a lot better this time around doing the Giro – Tour double than in 2010. Time will tell; with a few days of 'rest' in Corsica, and we will be ready to go and test ourselves…"
