Cadel Evans and BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said organizers of the Giro d'Italia made a good decision in canceling Friday's stage due to adverse weather conditions and snow on the 139km route that included three mountain passes.
Evans said when he woke up to rain and snow showers at the team's hotel in Val di Sole – which was 880 metres lower than the day's planned climbs – he immediately wondered how the race could proceed as planned. "It's always possible to pass those passes on a bike," he said. "But to have a good race and stay healthy and safe for everyone is really quite impossible. The organizers have done the right thing. For the communities who have invested to have a stage of the Giro, I'm sorry for them. But we can't control the weather." The continuing adverse weather conditions have also forced race organizers to modify the route of Saturday's stage. The new course is 210km (instead of 203) and still begins in Silandro. But the first three climbs have been eliminated leading to a summit finish at Tre Cime di Lavaredo. In the overall classification with two stages to go, Evans is second, 4’02” behind race leader Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team).
Baldato and Evans said the BMC Racing Team will procede with as normal a routine as possible for the remainder of the day. "Tomorrow is going to be an important day," Evans said. "And because of no racing today, it's going to be an even more important day than it would have been. So we have to train and prepare for that. And while we have an opportunity to rest, we have to utilize that moment to recover as best as possible and be at our best for tomorrow." Baldato said he told the riders to pay particular attention to what they eat and what they do. "The riders with experience know it's important to stay in good health and good shape because the next stage can also be difficult," he said.
