Riding his first race as a stagiaire for Orica-GreenEDGE, Caleb Ewan again proved that his a future star in the making when he made it into the decisive group in the RideLondon Classic. Despite coming up short against the likes of Philippe Gilbert in the finale, the Australian earned lots of praise from his team for his performance.
Stagiaire Caleb Ewan has impressed in his first appearance for ORICA-GreenEDGE at today’s Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic, featuring in the day’s winning break.
Ewan went with the winning move of 12 riders with just over 60km to the finish, before loosing contact as a result of a Philip Gilbert (BMC) attack in the final twenty kilometers.
Adam Blythe (NPC) won the race from a surviving group of five, Ewan dropping back to finish 44th.
“It was quite an aggressive race and Caleb did well to pick the winning move but just ran out of legs in the final,” sport director Matt White said.
“It was unfortunate that there was a lot of fast guys in there. When Gilbert made the winning move that split the group in half, Caleb was actually on his wheel but just wasn’t strong enough to hold on.
“It was a good experience for him. The boys were riding for him today, he was the leader.
“He had good form, he was coming off the Commonwealth Games and a good block at altitude so we gave him a real opportunity today and he did a very good job.“
Ewan will lead up to the world championships on the under-23 circuit before officially join the team’s roster in October ahead of the Tour of Beijing.
