Having been on the attack all day in the GP de Denain, Alexandre Geniez finished fourth in the Tour du Finistère that was held in difficult conditions with rain and cold. The FDJ rider had a mechanical problem and suggests that he was probably the strongest rider in the race.
"The conditions were really bad, with rain and a strong easterly wind," sports director Thierry Bricard said. "There was an early breakaway of five riders which was finally caught by a field of 30 riders who made the difference 50 kilometers from the finish. Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) attacked when entering the circuit at a time when Alexandre Géniez was victim of a mechanical problem on the climb. He got a new bike and was back in the convoy. In the next lap, he was leading the race with Voeckler, Baugnies (Wanty Group Gobert), Guay (Auber 93) and Saint-Martin (Marseille 13)."
The race remained tense as the peloton was chasing behind to the leaders. Finally, the junction was made under the red flame, first with Jérémy Roy, Antomarchi (Marseille 13) and Duval (Army) and later with the peloton from which De Troyer (Wanty Group Gobert) escaped to win.
"I think his mechanical problems and the effort to return to the pelotom took the victory away from Alexandre," said Bricaud who was disappointed with the outcome. However, the performance shows that Geniez is ready for the Giro which starts in three weeks.
On Sunday, FDJ will be at the start in Tro Bro Leon, the 8th round of Coupe de France where they have often been successful.
