Andy Fenn is preparing for his first season at Team Sky, where the 24 year old from Scotland is hoping to ride all of the big Classics that inspired him when he first began watching cycling on his TV.
“I loved the classics from an early age and it was those races, along with the Tour de France, that I watched on TV growing up,” Fenn admits to Team Sky’s website.
Fenn has ridden events like the Scheldeprijs, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and the Brussels Cycling Classic before, but he has never ridden a WorldTour Classic. This was due to the large Classics squad and tough competition at Omega Pharma-Quick Step. But at Sky, he will be a part of the team and will be able to ride the biggest races.
Fenn burst onto the scene in 2012 when he won both Trofeo Migjorn and Trofeo Palma at the Mallorca Challenge and was second in a stage of the Tour of Beijing. But he hasn’t been able to utilise his fast finish and love for the Cobbles, which he says he can now do at Sky.
“As a rider I see myself as part classics rider and part sprinter,” he explained. “There are quite a few guys who do both. Not necessarily pure sprinters but guys who can sprint and fare well in those races.”
“Up to this point I’ve never got the chance to ride the races I’d have liked to. Here with Team Sky hopefully I’ll get that opportunity. My big aim this year is to try and ride as many of those classics races as possible and get experience of them.”
