It has become a topic that is discussed every year, that of Fernando Alonso’s cycling project. The Formula 1 season is over and the McLaren driver has again spoken of the cycling team he had envisaged three years ago when Euskaltel-Euskadi folded.
This time, the Spaniard is very clear. There is no chance that the project will be revived in the immediate future but he emphasizes that he has not abandoned idea.
"It's currently in the refrigerator until it is the right moment,” he told Sportyou. “Right now, we are focused on Formula 1 and we have postponed the project a bit but we did not cancel it. It continues to exist but for now it is frozen.”
While the team was under construction in 2014 and about 70% of the job was done, everything was finally stopped suddenly and Alonso was very unclear about the situation. Reiterating every year a vow to one day build a professional cycling team, the 35-year-old Formula driver hopes that that he finally will start this project when he retires from his own sport.
