Roberto Ferrari again proved that he handles the positioning aspect of the sprints excellently when he found his way into a perfect position for the important final corner in today's second stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Lamprse-Merida sprinter took a fine fifth but regretted not having taken a few more risks in the turn.

With Lampre-Merida mostly focused on the GC, Roberto Ferrari is left to fend for himself in the sprint finishes but that's rarely a problem for the fast Italian who knows how to put himself in the right position. In today's first road stage of the Giro d'Italia, the lone Lampre-Merida jersey was seen near the front when the riders entered the all-important turn just 300m from the line and he had again put himself into a great place for the final sprint.

In the end, he took fifth but the result didn't live up to his expectations. Instead, he regretted not having taken a few more risks in the wet final corner.

"A top 5 resul in a stage of the Giro d'Italia is always a good result, but I still regret not having had more determination in the left-hand turn 300m from the finish line," he said. "The team has protected me well in the bunch throughout the race. 

"In the last kilometer I found a good position close to the riders that led the group, allowing me to the the final bend in a very good position. Some riders have entered the turn next to me and that's when I thought the asphalt was too slippery and I feared that my bike would slide in the wet conditions.

"After exiting the corner, I had to accelerate but the chance to try at least to fight for a better position had vanished. Congratulations to Kittel. He was too strong for everyone else."
