Roberto Ferrari was on the podium of the GP Beghelli, just behind two Italian riders, namely winner Colbrelli (Bardiani) and Belletti (Southeast). The Lampre cyclist, who recently extended his contract with Lampre-Merida, tried to exploit the role as captain which was assigned to him and he obtained a good result which was an extra value to the consistent performance by the whole team directed by Orlando Maini.
For most of the 196km, the race was led by the duo Kudus and Van Meirhaeghe but, at 61 km to go, the bunch raised its pace and neutralized the breakaway. A few kilometers later, Mattia Cattaneo and another 10 riders escpaed from the peloton, but their attack was soon over and, except for a breakaway of two riders, Zilioli and Lammertink, which was caught with 40km to go, no other attempts were successful.
At the last passage of the main climb, Valerio Conti, winner of the past edition of the race, and Jan Bakelants, recent winner of Giro dell’Emilia and of Gran Piemonte, escaped from the peloton, but the sprinters’s teams led the chase and closed the gap.
In the sprint of 40 riders, Ferrari was fast enough to be on the podium, the 55th in 2015 for Lampre-Merida (26 victories, 11 second places and 18 third positions).
" I would rather win. It was one of the few opportunities that I had this year to get a result. I am sorry because the team worked for me, but I was beaten by two strong riders. There is a bit of regret but that's okay," he said.
"The balance of the season is good. And it was confirmed that I will stay with Lampre for two years. The most important event will be the Giro and we'll have to be ready like this year. "
“Ferrari gave a lot to the team and to his team mates during the season and he would have deserved a top result. His sprint was good, but Colbrelli found an excellent starting point that led him to victor. The third place is satisfying, especially because it completed a very good performance by the whole team“, sports director Maini explained.
"All riders moved well, we could appreciate the responsiveness of Cattaneo and character of Conti in addition to the work of Bono who was fantastic in all situations and still be able to launch the sprint of Ferrari."
