Two stages in the Italian Dolomites, small 6-rider rosters and rule changes that include substantial bonuss seconds for the riders with most points in the intermediate and KOM points, make this year's Tour de Pologne a unique experience. As usual, the 7-stage race is the first step on the long road towards the Vuelta for those riders that didn't race the Tour, and this year is no exception as riders like Vincenzo Nibali, Sergio Henao and Rigoberto Uran are just some of the riders tat kick start the second half of their season in Poland. At the same time, a certain Sir Bradley Wiggins has started his journey towards the world TT championships with 7 days of racing in the Polish national tour. The race finishes with a novelty in the race's most recent history as the event includes its first time trial since it was granted ProTour status. The 37km course from Wieliczka to the traditional finish in Krakow is very long and so the stage has the potential to open up some big gaps between the GC contenders. The first 18km consist of a small loop south of Wieliczka and has a couple of rolling hills but the final 21km takes the riders along a long, straight, flat road into the center of Krakow. That final section really suit the powerful specialists and while those big riders will battle it out for the stage win, the tiny climbers will fight desperately to limit their losses.

The battle for the stage win is likely to play out early in the day as three of the world's best time triallists have no role to play in the GC fight but have a big chance of being the fastest today. Fabian Cancellara, Bradley Wiggins and Taylor Phinney have all set their sights on the world championships (the former on the road race, the latter two on the time trial) and so are not yet in peak condition but their pure class could very well see them fill the stage podium today. Later in the day we should be in for an exciting battle for the overall win when climbers Sergio Henao and Rafal Majka will do their utmost to keep their positions on the top of the leader board. However, the two favourites for the overall win are Ion Izagirre and Christophe Riblon who are the best rime triallists among the GC riders, and the race could very well come down to a duel between two riders who have a unique opportunity to take a maiden WorldTour stage race victory.
