Antonio Piedra will make his debut with the Brazilian Funvic team in La Tropicale Amissa Bongo which will be held in Gabon from the 18th to the 24th of January. The Andalusian returns after a year away from the professional scene.
Carrefour Funvic Soul Cycling Team has been granted a Professional Continental license for 2016. Manager Benedito Tadeu de Azevedo Junior has selected the following riders to compete in La Tropicale (2.1): Flávio Santos, Magno Nazaret, Francisco Chamorro, Kleber Ramos, Antonio Piedra and Murilo Affonso.
Piedra said goodbye to professional peloton in 2015 after eight seasons at the highest level, riding for Fuerteventura (2007), Andalusia (2008-2011) and Caja Rural (2012-2014). He won a stage of the 2012 Vuelta a Espana to Lagos de Covadonga. His compatriot Pablo Urtasun is the other European signing of the Brazilian team that will do most of the Spanish and Portuguese calendar.
Other teams confirmed for La Tropicale Amissa Bongo are Direct Energie and Fortuneo-Vital Concept (Professional Continental), SkyDive Dubai and Bike Aid (Continental) and the national teams of Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Morocco and Rwanda.
