The USA Pro Challenge unveiled a new time trial course for the fifth edition of the race. Although it was only 13.5km the altitude combined with the KOM climb from the previous stage, made for a tough challenge. Nate Brown was the Cannondale's top finisher, netting 10th on the stage.
“The altitude made it seem forever out there!” said Brown who posted a top early time on the stage. “I had no idea I would have a best time, especially since I haven’t felt great at altitude. So it was great to finish in the top ten here.”
The crowds really came out for the new Breckenridge time trial, especially amassing at the top of the climb to cheer on the riders.
“It was crazy, I couldn’t see where the top of the climb was because there were so many people at the top,” said Brown. “I’m glad I had Charly behind to help me out, but it was so great to have those fans out there — it really made the race.”
In this year’s time trial, riders had to negotiate a fast descent back into downtown Breckenridge.
“I got in the super-tuck for almost all of it. I was even in the super-tuck on the corners. The wide roads made it fast.”
Davide Formolo, who posted a super fast early time, came into the last corner at a very high speed and crashed. According to directors at the finish, he seemed to be ok, save some road rash.
Neo-pro Ruben Zepuntke had a strong ride for the Green Argyle, capping off the team’s honors with a top-20 result.
