One week after finishing in the top 10 in his first ever WorldTour race, Davide Formolo again showed his exceptional talent when he was beaten into second by Vincenzo Nibali in the Italian road race championships. The Italian has now set his sights on the mountainous American races in the second half of the season.
Davide Formolo produced another strong performance in his first season as a professional. The Cannondale Pro Cycling’s young gun took second place in the Italian road race Championships (220 km from Malè to Fondo), playing his chances until the finish line where Vincenzo Nibali sprinted to the victory, while Matteo Rabottini placed third, Giovanni Visconti was fourth, and Damiano Caruso fifth.
“I’m pretty satisfied with this result. I placed second in such an important race like the Italian Championships, in my first year as professional and behind a strong rider like Nibali – I really have nothing to complain about, even though I dreamed to win until the last meter” said Formolo.
“I’m really happy with the performance I did. I felt good for the entire race and this was a boost of morale for the finale. I knew I could play my chances – the team strategy gave me the freedom to do my race and I want to thank my teammates for the great support. After the last passage of the finish I understood I could take an important result. Nibali was the strongest rider in the peloton and I just followed his wheel. When he attacked I did an extra effort to follow him. Then I did my best in the sprint.
“The experience at the Tour de Suisse was very important for my condition and for my confidence. I’m doing my first season race after race, without pressure and just doing my best. I’m sure I’m working well and I hope I can find a full satisfaction before the end of the season” added Formolo.
Next on the schedule for Formolo is some altitude training at San Pellegrino in Italy in preparation for his upcoming races at Tour de Pologne and then in the US at the Tour of Utah and the USA Pro Challenge that will take him to the high mountains of the United States where his ability to climb with the best in the world surely will see him seek strong results at these races.
“I’m looking for a strong performance in these events – these are great chance to stand out and make my first year as professional really special,” said Formolo.
