Davide Formolo has had pressure on himself ever since he turned pro and was second in his national road race and was seventh in the Tour de Suisse. Last year, he won a stage in his debut Giro and this year, the Italian’s teammate Rigo Uran says he can be the revelation of the race. No pressure then Davide.

“When you start with a big goal from the start of the season it’s hugely motivating. You do everything – and I have done everything – to arrive here in good shape,” he said at Cannondale’s pre-Giro press conference at the Apeldoorn velodrome on Wednesday. In a race as long as this, that can make a huge difference – especially in the last week. It gives you great desire to achieve what you’re capable of achieving.”

At 23, Formolo certainly has the time and potential to become a Grand Tour contender, but the youngster says this Giro is all about Uran, who has twice been a runner-up in the Corsa Rosa. However, Formolo says he certainly will have opportunities to try and repeat his stage success of twelve months ago.

“The main focus is the GC with Rigo, and I know I’m here to support him. My main goal is to support him in the key moments, but for sure, over the course of 21 days maybe we can find some opportunities for myself.”
