In an interview with Luxembourg newspaper Le Quotidien Frank Schleck shared his thoughts on the future, his change from Saxobank to Leopard, and the recent doping ban.
"I am hungry to race again, hungry to win again," he said. "I have turned a page in my life and I am motivated like never before."
Frank Schleck also acknowledged the chaotic change from Saxobank - under Riis, towards Leopard Trek - under Kim Andersen:
“The first year on the new team was a superb nine months. In a team there are always numerous small details. There are sacrifices and investments.”
“It worked well with Bjarne [Riis], and it was a good team we left behind.”
“You learn a lot. Today, we would probably have done things differently. But it was a great team [Leopard]. The team felt like our own, and everything went so well the first year. We were second and third in the Tour de France [himself and Any Schleck], but people have almost forgotten it."
“One of my dreams were to be on the Tour podium with one of my children, and I accomplished that in 2011.”
Schleck admitted that the recent hard times have only made him more determined, and stated that he was eager to resume the 2014 season:
"It’s not certain yet whether I’ll start the season at the [Tour] Down Under, or in Argentina, at the Tour de San Luis. Paris-Nice will be the first big test. Of course, the management decides but I am thinking about Tour of the Basque country, the Ardennes Classics and then the Tour de Suisse to prepare for the Tour de France."
Frank Schleck also elaborated on the Xipadmide doping case, which made the Luxembourh anti-doping agency (ALAD) suspend him for a year:
“In the end you can only rely on yourself,” he stated, and added that “in the past I made the mistake of putting too much faith in others.”
On his future career Frank Schleck noted:
"No one has the right to say my career is over, apart from myself. It might be in 2016 with the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. That’s soon already, but I am thinking about it. But only if I take a medal home."
Hopefully the Schlecks will be back in 2014, because while it is true cycling forgets easily, it is also true that the brothers have provided us with prime entertainment in the mountains. More of the ladder please!
