The reform of professional cycling is set to open the door for more WorldTour races. Now GP de Fourmies and Tre Valli Varesine have indicated their intention to apply for a spot on the finest calendar.
La Voix du Nord have reported that the GP de Fourmies plans to be a candidate for the WorldTour circuit in 2017. A support group on Facebook has even been created.
The race is currently ranked as a 1.HC event on Europe Tour. It has traditionally suited sprinters but in 2015 Italian Fabio Felline took the win with a late move.
At the same time, VareseNews reports that the organizers of the historic classic Italian, Tre Valli Varesine, have applied for a spot on the WorldTour. The Italian race is the highlight of the Trittico Lombardo race series and is now held in late September on a hilly circuit in Varese. Vincenzo Nibali won the 2015 edition in what was a memorable week that also saw him come out on top in Il Lombardia.
