Chris Froome has had to cancel his participation in tomorrow's Il Lombardia due to back pain. A scan has revealed an inflamed sacroiliac joint that prevent the Tour de France winner from riding the final monument of the season.

Chris Froome was set to bring his European campaign to a close in tomorrow's Il Lombardia but the Brit has had to forfeit his participation due to back pain. The problems occurred during Sunday's Worlds road race where he was forced to abandon and don't allow him to race the big Italian autumn classic.

“Sadly, I won't be able to compete at Il Lombardia on Sunday," Froome told on his team website. "I had some back pain at the World Championships last weekend and it hasn’t settled down as I'd hoped."

Team Sky doctor Alan Farrell explained further about the injury.

“A scan this week revealed that Chris is suffering from an inflamed sacroiliac joint," he said. "We are monitoring him as a team but unfortunately the injury means he will not be able to take part in the race this weekend.”

Froome had hoped to reach peak condition for the World Championships but the pain forced him out of the race. He had hoped to make amends tomorrow but will now have to put an early end to his European racing season. He is set to travel to Japan to participate in the Japan Cup and the Saitama criterium organized by Tour de France organizers ASO before travelling to Kenya for a holiday.

Despite Froome's absence, Sky still has a powerful line-up for tomorrow's race. Rigoberto Uran and Sergio Henao will lead the team and will be ably supported by Dario Cataldo, Christian Knees, Salvatore Puccio and Xabier Zandio.
