Dan Frost will have a completely different outlook than he has had in the past when the 2014 Tour de France kicks off. After years of working as a sports director for Team Tinkoff-Saxo and supporting Alberto Contador, he will now be part of the Sky setup, shifting his backing to Contador's main rival Chris Froome.
For several years, Dan Frost has been a loyal sports director at Bjarne Riis' team that has now been taken over by Oleg Tinkov and renamed Team Tinkoff-Saxo. Working for stars like Ivan Basso, Carlos Sastre, Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador, the Dane has been an instrumental part in the success that the Danish team has had.
Due to financial uncertainty for the 2014 season, however, the team had to tighten the belts at the end of last year. To remove the extra fat, a few sports directors were let go, with Frost having to look for another employer.
The Dane found his new home at Team Sky which puts him in a peculiar situation. Having supported Contador in 2014, he will now cross his fingers that Contador's archrival Chris Froome come out on top when the next edition of the Tour de France kicks off in July.
With the cycling world being one of constant change, Frost is ready for the challenge.
"I am facing a new, exciting challenge," he told CyclingQuotes. "That's how it is in the cycling world. After 8 nice and instructive years with Bjarne [Riis], it is probably a good idea to mix things up a bit. I am looking forward to kicking things off for real with Team Sky and when we are on the roads, Tinkoff-Saxo are not our only rivals.
"When I started working with Bjarne, Ivan Basso was the star, then it was the Schleck brothers, Fabian Cancellara, and Carlos Sastre," he added. "In the last phase, it was Alberto Contador so I am pretty used to changing things continually.
Frost was only signed at the end of the year and has not had an awful lot of time to adjust himself to his new position. However, he has had the chance to meet the team's biggest star and he has a pleasant impression of one of cycling's major stars.
"I attended a week-long training camp with Team Sky in December and I met Chris Froome who is a very likeable and a bit shy guy," he said. "I can only say that I am looking forward to the 2014 season."
