Jakob Fuglsang was the big favourite to win the Tour of Denmark but today the Astana rider crashed out of the race. Despite being able to continue the race, the Dane had lost all motivation to continue.
Going into the Tour of Denmark, Jakob Fuglsang was the favourite to take a fourth win in his home race. However, the Dane had a setback in yesterday's stage when he crashed in the finale.
Today he hoped to strike back in the queen stage but when he crashed again on the finishing circuit, he had had enough. The Dane abandoned the race and left it to teammates Alexey Lutsenko and Valerio Agnoli to defend the Astana colours.
“I avoided the big crash and went to the left on the sidewalk but then a rider hit me from behind and I flipped over a mailbox and a steel road guard onto the driveway of somebody’s house," he said.
"Now I feel empty," he added to JyllandsPosten. "I am very disappointed and frustrated but the only thing I can do is to take a small break and recover for later races. Maybe I would have been able to continue but sometimes you have to ask yourself if it serves any purpose. This time I had had enough and now I just have to recover mentally from this."
