"The stage was warm until it started raining. The last downhill was the only time I felt cold."
Those were the words of Astana's Jakob Fuglsang after stage five at the Tour de Romandie. Fuglsang and his teammates went to the front of the peloton on the second of four categorized mountains to increase the speed and leave key competitors behind.
At the base of the penultimate climb the peloton decreased to 40 riders, with Astana Pro Team at the front and chasing a day-long breakaway. Teammates Andrey Zeits, Alessandro Vanotti, Rein Taaramäe and Andrei Grivko all worked until only 20 riders remained at the front, including Fuglsang, Michele Scarponi and Vincenzo Nibali.
In the final 10km Nibali and Scarponi rode evenly to finish 53 seconds behind stage winner Thibau Pinot of France, with Fuglsang further back in a cold mountain rain.
