Juan Manuel Garate has invited the media to a press conference on Monday in San Sebastian to announce his retirement from professional cycling. At 38 years of age, he will put an end to his career after he didn't do any races with the Belkin team in 2014.

Garate fought a legal case for his social rights in Spain and won the battle. UCI registered him as a member of the Dutch team in mid-May and he appeared on the website. Since August he has had a license but he has not been selected for any races. His last race was the 2013 Vuelta a Espana.

Professional since 2000, Garate did 26 Grand Tours (12 Vuelta, 8 Giros and 6 Tours) and has won a stage in each of the tree races. He won a stage in the Spanish event in 2011 and in Italy in 2006 before he won the mountain stage to Mont Ventoux in the 009 Tour. He was Spanish road race champion in 2005 and won a stage and was second in Clasica San Sebastian in 2007. He finished fourth overall in the 2002 Giro and fifth in the 2005 edition of the Italian grand tour.

He rode for Lampre (2000-2004), Saunier Duval (2005), Quick Step (2006-2008), Rabobank (2009-2012) and Belkin (2013-2014)
