According to Cyclingnews, former rider Stefano Garzelli will come back in the peloton in the role of directeur sportif. He will begin in a few days with Nippo-Vini Fantini during the Vuelta a Burgos. He will manage especially Damiano Cunego and Daniele Colli, who fractured his arm after hitting a photographer leaning over the barriers at the Giro d'Italia this year.
“It’ll be a pleasure collaborate with the Nippo Vini Fantini team and so work with directeur sportif of the calibre of Stefano Giuliani and Martio Manzoni. I can’t wait to return to a role that excites me, while not giving up my work with television."
He was a professional rider between 1997 and 2013. The high point of his career was his overall win in the 2000 Giro d'Italia, after a close three-way competition with Gilberto Simoni and Francesco Casagrande. He won also the Tour de Suisse (1998), the Vuelta a Aragon (2004) and Tirreno-Adriatico (2010).
