After the doping positive of Danilo Di Luca and Mauro Santambrogio, the Vini Fantini team will have a new level of transparency and plans to publish the biological passport data of its riders. The team will be known as Neri Sottoli, has appointed Stefano Garzelli as sports director and is considering signing Chris Horner for the coming season.
Prior to the 2013 season, the Vini Fantini team was a flourishing cycling project which enjoyed plenty of support from RCS Sport, organizers of the major Italian races, and which had had plenty of success on the road. After a disastrous season in which the team was rocked by the doping positives of Danilo Di Luca and Mauro Santambrogio, the team is now trying to rebuild itself and restore confidence.
The scandals prompted main sponsor Vini Fantini to pull the plug and the team has been operating under the name of YellowFluo. It will be known as Neri Sottoli in 2014. It has been registered as a professional continental team for the coming season and despite its absence from the initial list of applicants, it is seeking a wildcard invitation for the Giro d'Italia.
In an attempt to show race organizers, potential sponsors and the fans that they can have confidence in the team, managers Luca Scinto and Angelo Citracca have decided to increase its level of transparency. In 2014, it plans to publish all the data from the riders' biological passports.
The team has signed Stefano Garzelli as new sports director. Having been one of the dominant Italian riders for the past decade, Garzelli ended his career at last year's Giro d'Italia where he rode in the Vini Fantini colours.
Garzelli won the Italian grand tour in 2000 and was 2nd three years later. He won the mountains classification in both 2009 and 2011 and won 9 stages in the race. He had planned to end his career at the 2012 edition of the race but his Acqua e Sapone team missed out on an invitation. He prolonged his career and rode the first half of the 2013 season with Vini Fantini until bringing the curtain down in his favourite race.
"It was my idea. It took a while to persuade him but eventually Stefano accepted it," Scinto told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I'm sure that he has the qualities to do well. We have opposite characters but complement eache other. His contribution to the young riders will be crucial."
The team has lost a number of key riders, including Oscar Gatto who has signed with Cannondale, but will keep Matteo Rabottini, Francesco Chicchi and Mauro Finetto in leading roles. Their main addition is the versatile Simone Ponzi who arrives from Astana.
However, the team may have the current Vuelta a Espana champion in their ranks in the coming season. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Horner's agent Michael Rutherford has given the team management an offer that it is now considering.
Horner has been searching for a new team since negotiations with Trek - the successor of his current Radioshack team - broke down. He has claimed that he could easily find a new home but has difficulty finding an employer that is willing to pay him like a grand tour winner.
YellowFluo has confirmed 17 riders for its 2014 roster.
