Oscar Gatto finally took his first win for Cannondale when he emerged as the strongest in the bunch sprint on the second stage of the Tour of Austria. The victory came as a big relief for the Italian who had been in search of the elusive victory for a long time.
Italian rider Oscar Gatto claims today the first victory of the season as well as the first wearing the jersey of Cannondale Pro Cycling. In the second stage of the Tour of Austria (Waidhofen-Bad Ischl, 181 km) Gatto won the bunch sprint leaving behind Lobato (Movistar) and Haller (Katusha). For Gatto is the 12th success since he became professional, while for Cannondale Pro Cycling is the 13th in 2014.
"I was waiting for this success for a long time since January and I'm really happy that finally came" said Gatto. "I got close to a win in Belgium, then at the Giro d'Italia in the stage finishing in Vittorio Veneto if I didn't crash. It's never easy to keep calm when you don't see any sign of good luck, but I knew I had to stay concentrated doing my best and never giving up.
"Today we aimed for the victory since the morning. The finale was very fast and the finish line came after a descent. It was not easy to keep the head of the peloton. My teammates did a great job protecting and supporting me. Caruso led me until the final 300 metres, then I decided to anticipate to avoid any risk of traffic in the sprint. Everything went as we planned, I could not ask more than this," added Gatto.
